Richards Bay’s origins trace back to the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879 when it served as a makeshift harbour under Commodore Sir Markus Eugene Brown. Recognizing its potential, harbour engineer Cathcart Methven proposed developing the site into a full-fledged port in 1902.
Over the years, the area evolved significantly. In 1935, the Richards Bay Game Sanctuary was established to protect the region’s unique ecosystem, later expanding into Richards Bay Park by 1943. The town was officially laid out in 1954 and proclaimed in 1969.
