History and Name Change

Witbank was founded in 1890 and quickly became a hub for coal mining. The name “Witbank” is Afrikaans for “white ridge,” a reference to a sandstone outcrop where travelers and wagon transport drivers would stop to rest.

In 2006, the government of Mpumalanga officially changed the name to eMalahleni, meaning “place of coal” in Zulu. The change was made to reflect the region’s heritage and align with the Emalahleni Local Municipality. Despite this, many locals and businesses still use the name Witbank.

Economy and Industry

Coal mining is the backbone of Witbank’s economy. The area is home to several coal mines that supply power stations across South Africa. The city’s proximity to major highways and rail routes makes it an important transport hub for the coal and energy sectors.

In addition to mining, power generation is another key industry. Some of South Africa’s largest power stations, such as Kendal, Duvha, and Kusile, are located near Witbank. These plants provide electricity to much of the country.

Infrastructure and Development

Witbank is a rapidly growing city with modern amenities. It has shopping malls, schools, hospitals, and businesses, making it a convenient place to live and work. The city also serves as a gateway between Johannesburg and Mbombela (Nelspruit), as it is located along the N4 highway, part of the Maputo Corridor trade route.

Tourism and Attractions

Although primarily an industrial city, Witbank has natural attractions and leisure activities. Visitors can explore:

  • Witbank Dam – One of the largest dams in South Africa, popular for boating, fishing, and water sports.
  • Nature Reserves – Nearby reserves offer wildlife experiences and outdoor activities.
  • Coal Mining Tours – Some companies offer insights into the history and impact of mining in the region.
