Hermanus is world-renowned for its incredible whale-watching opportunities. Every year, between June and November, Southern Right whales migrate to these waters, delighting visitors with their majestic presence. The town even boasts the world’s only whale crier, who alerts visitors when these gentle giants are spotted offshore.

Beyond whale watching, Hermanus offers an array of outdoor experiences. From exhilarating shark cage diving to tranquil mountain hikes, there’s something for every nature enthusiast. The surrounding landscapes include unspoiled beaches, secluded forests, crashing waves, and the enchanting Hemel-en-Aarde Valley, aptly named ‘Heaven and Earth.’

Arts, Culture, and Culinary Delights

Hermanus is not just about nature; it is also a thriving artistic and cultural hub. Public art installations and sculptures at Gearing’s Point enhance the town’s creative atmosphere, while various galleries provide an engaging art walk experience. The town’s markets and boutique shops add to its vibrant charm, offering local crafts, handmade goods, and delicious treats.

Food lovers are in for a treat with a variety of dining options that highlight fresh seafood, farm-to-table produce, and world-class wines from nearby vineyards. The Hemel-en-Aarde Valley is home to some of South Africa’s finest wineries, making it a must-visit for wine enthusiasts.

Where to Stay

Hermanus offers a wide range of accommodations to suit every traveler’s needs. Whether you prefer five-star luxury, a cozy guesthouse, a charming B&B, or a budget-friendly backpacker lodge, there’s something for everyone. For those who love a rustic experience, farm stays and camping options provide a closer connection to nature.

A Rich History

The town’s history is rooted in the story of Hermanus Pieters, a Dutch teacher who arrived in the Cape in 1815. He frequently vacationed near a natural spring in what is now Hermanus, leading to the area being named Hermanuspietersfontein. In 1902, the name was shortened for postal convenience, giving us the name Hermanus.

A fascinating historical connection exists between Hermanus and World War II. The parents of Roger Bushell, the mastermind behind the famous “Great Escape” from Stalag Luft III, retired here, and Bushell’s name is commemorated on the town’s war memorial.
