Through its two primary programs, the SABS External Bursary Scheme and the ARSO Essay Competition, the South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) provides financial assistance to South African students.
SABS External Bursary Scheme 2025
The SABS External Bursary Scheme offers financial assistance to South African students pursuing full-time studies in the following fields:

The bursary covers registration fees, tuition fees, books, and accommodation, up to a maximum of R150,000 per year. To be eligible, applicants must:Department of Labour+2Zabursaries+2Instagram+2
- Be South African citizens under the age of 25.
- Have completed Matric.
- Be enrolled or accepted for full-time undergraduate studies in the specified fields at a recognized South African tertiary institution.
- Have achieved a minimum overall average of 65% in their most recent studies.

Preference is given to students with disabilities and those who meet affirmative action criteria. The application deadline is February 7, 2025.
ARSO 12th Continental Essay Competition 2025
In collaboration with the African Organisation for Standardisation (ARSO), SABS invites South African tertiary students to participate in the 12th ARSO Continental Essay Competition. The 2025 theme is: “Role of Education about Standardisation (EaS) in shaping Education and African Students for the sustainable Development opportunities and challenges in the 21st Century.
Essays should be between 1,000 and 1,200 words, written in English, and demonstrate originality, creativity, and a clear understanding of the theme. The national competition offers five prizes:
- First prize: Bursary worth R150,000
- Second prize: Bursary worth R130,000
- Third prize: Bursary worth R120,000
- Fourth prize: Cash prize of R15,000
- Fifth prize: Cash prize of R15,000
The top five national essays will advance to the continental competition. Eligible participants must be South African citizens, 35 years old or younger, and registered at a recognized South African tertiary institution. The submission deadline is March 31, 2025.
