Correctional Services George

The George Correctional Centre, situated in George, Western Cape, South Africa, is a pivotal institution within the nation’s correctional system. As the third-largest correctional facility in the Western Cape, it plays a significant role in the rehabilitation and reintegration of offenders.

Overview of George Correctional Centre

Located at 10 Union Street, George South, the facility operates under the jurisdiction of the Department of Correctional Services. It houses approximately 1,400 inmates and is supported by a dedicated staff of around 220 members.

Leadership and Vision

Since January 2022, the centre has been under the leadership of Eddie Myners, a former SWD Eagles rugby coach and seasoned correctional services professional. Myners emphasizes a “back-to-basics” approach, focusing on safety, rehabilitation, and preparing inmates for positive societal contributions. He advocates for strong collaborations with external organizations to enhance rehabilitation and reintegration efforts.

Challenges and Initiatives

The centre has faced challenges, notably overcrowding. In December 2016, it housed 1,139 inmates in a facility designed for 563, reflecting an overcrowding ratio of 202.3%.

To address this, plans for facility expansion have been proposed, though financial constraints have delayed implementation.

Despite these challenges, the George Correctional Centre remains committed to its mission of rehabilitating offenders and ensuring public safety. Through dedicated leadership and community collaboration, the centre strives to transform lives and contribute positively to society.
