The South African city of Welkom (pronounced [ˈvɛlkɔm] in Afrikaans) is situated in the Free State province, some 140 kilometers (90 miles) northeast of the provincial capital, Bloemfontein. Circle City, City Within A Garden, Mvela, and Matjhabeng are other names for Welkom. The city’s Sesotho name, Matjhabeng, which translates to “where nations meet,” comes from the migrant labor system, in which workers from many nations, including Lesotho, Malawi, and Mozambique, came together to work in the gold fields’ mines.
